What to visit to discover the Val d'Orcia

To discover the Val D'Orcia you must visit Castiglione d'Orcia, where you can see traces of the ancient castle dominated by the imposing ruins of the Rocca degli Aldobrandeschi. In front of Castiglione d'Orcia, the Rocca di Tentennano and at its feet the medieval village of Rocca d'Orcia. Then San Quirico d'Orcia, a town of Etruscan origin that rises on the Via Francigena, here is the Hospital of the Scala, which gave hospitality to pilgrims passing through. To visit also the Collegiate Church and the Church of the Madonna, the remains of the tower of the Cassero and the Horti Leonini, a typical sixteenth-century garden. Not far away is the hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, a thermal center known for its water square. The Piazza delle Sorgenti, is located in the center of the village, surrounded by Renaissance buildings, in the center of which stands a large medieval pool, where the water flows from the thermal spring. In the surroundings of the village there are ancient underground mills with storage tanks and spas. Then Radicofani, in the past a very important stopover and refreshment on the Via Francigena, Montalcino, which dominates the Ombrone dell'Orcia and Asso valleys, and Pienza, a town that represents one of the most important architectural achievements based on the humanistic ideals of the fifteenth century, so much so that its historic center was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1996.
